DARDR Dylan (2025)

This Domestic Abuse Related Death Review (DARDR) was published in March 2026 and examines the tragic death of Dylan (pseudonym), who died by suicide in August 2022 following a prolonged period of coercive and controlling behaviour within an intimate same-sex relationship.

Commissioned by Salford Community Safety Partnership, the review considers agency responses, missed opportunities, and the wider contextual factors that shaped Dylan’s experiences. It draws on information from statutory and voluntary agencies, family and friends, and a detailed chronology of contact prior to his death.

Key learning themes include:

  • Recognising domestic abuse in same‑sex relationships, including unconscious bias and gaps in professional curiosity
  • The strong links between domestic abuse, mental health and suicidality, and the need to understand how these risks intersect
  • Improved routine and selective enquiry, particularly when individuals present with ambiguous or complex circumstances
  • The importance of accurate information recording, including identifying third parties, use of interpreters, and understanding relational context
  • The need for accessible, visible support for LGBTQ+ victims, including online pathways and specialist resources.

These lessons aim to strengthen local and national practice, ensuring that victims of abuse—regardless of gender or sexuality—receive timely, informed and culturally competent support. The findings highlight the critical importance of early identification, holistic assessment, and multi‑agency communication to reduce future harm and prevent further tragedies.
