Children & Young People's LGBTQ+ Working group
The LGBTQ+ working group was set up in 2017 in response to the Proud Trust report (2016).
The working group paused during Covid due to ongoing service pressures but the group has restarted and a search for a new chair has commenced.
The group has representatives from Salford ICP, Salford CAMHS; Education, Fostering Team, Youth Service, Children’s Services; 42nd Street; Salford CVS, The Proud Trust, LGBT Youth Group, Equality & Diversity Team.
An action plan has been developed following the recommendations in the Proud Trust report under the following headings:
- Communication and Engagement
- Good Practice
- Workforce Development
- Service User Involvement
- Service Development
The restarted group will meet to assess progress to date on the 5 recommendations and update actions where areas of development are identified.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Research - The Proud Trust
Experiences and identified needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) young people in Salford and implications for tailored service provisions - Consultation research with young people and service providers (2016)
The Proud Trust was commissioned, as part of Salford's 0-25 Emotional Health and Wellbeing work, to undertake a consultation with LGBT young people in Salford.
The aim of the research was to better understand the likely size of the LBGT population aged under 25 in Salford and their experiences and needs in terms of emotional health and wellbeing. We also wanted to engage young people and services through the research and involve them in influencing and shaping services. Finally, we asked to look at what works well here in Salford and elsewhere.

School Report
School Report 2017 is Stonewall's new research with the Centre for Family Research at the University of Cambridge into the experiences of over 3,700 lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT) pupils in Britain's schools.
The study shows that while progress has been made over the last decade, many LGBT young people continue to face significant challenges in Britain's schools. The full Stonewall report is available in the downloadable section at the bottom of this page.
Stonewall has also produced the following resources and toolkits for schools:
- An Introduction to Supporting LGBT Young People - provides guidance for schools on how to support trans young people
- Getting started - a practical toolkit for tackling homophobic, biophobic and transphobic bullying, there are two versions available, one for primary schools and one for secondary schools

Salford LGBTQ+ Youth Groups
Salford Youth Service support 3 (soon to be 4) youth groups across the City for young people aged 13-17 years who identify as LGBT or who are questioning their sexuality and/or gender.
The groups provide an opportunity for young people to socialise, make friends and take part in lots of events like Pride, IDAHOT, LGBT history month and go on trips and visits.
Young people receive support from staff and peers looking at LGBT related issues. The group is a safe place for young people to explore their identity which can help them discover who they want to become.
T & Toast Groups
Youth Group: Salford's trans youth group is a monthly safe space for trans and non-binary young people, providing a welcoming and safe place to engage with other trans and non-binary people in discussions on trans-specific issues, play games, take part in activities and become a voice for trans young people in Salford
Parent / Carer Group: a supportive group for parents and carers of trans and non-binary young people, providing a safe space to discuss ad questions or concerns you may have with experienced staff and parents.
Both groups meet monthly - on the 3rd Sunday of every month, 1.30pm - 3.30pm.
