Reducing recruitment costs and supporting the community
Over 200 Salford businesses of all sizes are working with Jobcentre Plus as part of a Local Employment Partnership.
This agreement is designed to build on an employer's existing approach to recruitment - finding the right person for the job. There are no complications, no bills to pay, no risks - just plenty of support. In addition, employers can claim a subsidy of £1,000 for every eligible person recruited, who has been claiming Jobseekers Allowance for six months or more.
Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust is one of those successfully working as part of the Local Employment Partnership and achieved national recognition for the support it provides, winning one of only six National 2009 Local Employment Partnership awards, from more than 1,000 entries.
Lesley Moss, HR Services Manager at the Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust said, "Each local person that we move into employment helps not only themselves but their families too. They are also contributing directly to the local economy. The trust is committed to playing an active role in Salford, helping to support people to gain employment and develop skills and capability in the community. Knowing we have helped someone turn their life around is a great thing and the ripple effect it has on those people's families makes it very rewarding".

Help in challenging times
Jobcentre Plus has a well-earned reputation for providing free support and advice to businesses who are recruiting but did you know that they can also help in redundancy situations? Organised directly with the employer, the level of support varies according to the scale and impact of job losses. Support for staff facing redundancy might include:
- information, advice and guidance on alternative jobs available
- matching individual employees to known vacancies
- provision of on-site job shops and fairs
- help with writing CVs and developing or brushing up on job search skills
- advice from specialists about out of work benefits, business start up, tax credits and debt/financial matters
Where more is needed, the Jobcentre Plus Rapid Response Service offers:
- a personal skills analysis to identify transferable skills and training needs relevant to the labour market
- job focused training to help individuals develop skills needed within the local labour market
- an action fund to address individual shorter term barriers to taking up training or a specific job offer
Jobcentre Plus strives to link redundant workers with local employers who are recruiting, a recent example of this was when workers who were made redundant from TUI / First Choice in Salford were introduced to British Gas in Old Trafford.
Nuala Wooster from British Gas said, "We were happy to meet with the TUI workforce and talk through our job roles. We are expanding services locally and will be looking to recruit from the experienced and well motivated people we met."

Backing young Britain
People of all ages are being hit by the recession but young people are amongst those most at risk. That's why the ‘Backing young Britain' campaign - uniting business and government - was launched in July 2009.
The campaign provides £40 million to fund:
- over 20,000 additional internships so that graduates and non graduates can get high quality work experience
- a new mentoring network
- more help from day one of unemployment
Also announced were the first 47,000 youth jobs supported by the Future Jobs Fund. This is a government initiative to help young people find work or training within a year of looking. Local businesses and other organisations can make a positive commitment to support young people by:
- working with a partnership to bid for one of the 100,000 jobs for young people from the Future Jobs Fund
- offering volunteering places or mentors for school or university leavers providing work experience places to help young people learn about work, making contacts and filling their CV with useful and relevant content
- considering a young person for a job through a work trial
offering internships for graduates - providing apprenticeships for 16-24 year olds joining a Local Employment Partnership

‘Collaborate to innovate' research and intelligence group
As a result of the successful ‘Collaborate to innovate' two day workshop held in June 2009, a group of key partner representatives have been undertaking actions to improve the coordination of research and intelligence across the Salford Strategic Partnership. Some of the group's recent key actions are:
- establishing formal terms of reference and a work plan for the group
- establishing an action plan for the further development of the Partners IN Salford information observatory
- producing a draft information sharing framework and information exchange agreement as a means of improving and formalising information sharing amongst partner organisations
- developing a skills audit aimed at establishing key research and intelligence skills across the partnership
- developing a data set prioritisation template, which will be circulated and agreed by partners as the key data, which needs to be shared amongst the partnership and reflect the partnership's priorities
- developing an observatory 'end user' seminar, to be held in February 2010 aimed at assessing and developing the current Partners IN Salford information observatory
- establishing an IDeA Community of Practice for a wider Salford Strategic Partnership Research and Intelligence Network (please use the contact below should you wish to be part of this wider research and intelligence community)

Keep up-to-date with overview and scrutiny
The council's Overview and Scrutiny team looks at the services and issues that affect residents' lives and identifies improvements that need to be made. They've recently started to produce e-bulletins to allow people to keep up to date with their work. The latest e-bulletin covers topics such as new powers and roles the team has, issues facing young people with learning disabilities/difficulties, neighbourhood policing and the availability of NHS dentists in Salford. To be added to the distribution list, please contact Karen Dainty on 0161 793 2513. You can also view the e-bulletins at www.salford.gov.uk/scrutiny-downloads
